Campaign kick-off in Zurich

Right on time for the kick-off of the housing and land rights campaign the Zurich Tenants' Association is planing a practical introduction into "how to make a city - even if it's a global one - socially sustainable".

Since the time of industrialisation today's "global city" Zurich is a place of intense interest struggles. 100 years ago, the article introducing not-for-profit housing was written into the local laws; nowadays the struggle is fought house for house to stop severe gentrification processes in the centre. On global habitat day, the 1st of October, the Zurich Tenants' association is giving a course, how to do it...

Quite unexpectedly the battle over one of the last waste areas in the city center was won - also right on time for being part of our campaign!

Initiated by the urban.lab in 2006, the process to take a piece of land away from globalisation was finally won last Wednesday: The urban executive handed over communal land to the cooperative "Kalkbreite" them to realise a socially and ecologically sustainable housing estate; it is meant to be a model for "the right mix" of migrant families and yuppies, housing, culture and community business, young and old, "communes" and lonely cowboys...
