On the morning of Thursday, October 10, 2013, more than 800 community members, media and other civil society representives peacefully gathered at Wat Phnom in Cambodia's capital to celebrate World Habitat Day. Around 10:00 am, hundreds of monks, land communities and their families and reps from unions, associations and NGOs marched to the Phnom Penh Municipality to deliver a petition to resolve land disputes and stop forced evictions. More than 200 mixed police in riot gear attempted to prevent the people from marching. After heated negotiations, demonstrators delivered the petition to the PP Municipality but they were unable to deliver the 2nd petition to the Ministry for Land Management, Urban Planning & Construction.
